In Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea, protagonist Santiago faces the struggle of reeling in a marlin. During his battle with the fish, he states “Man is not made for defeat. Man can be destroyed but never defeated.” This quote resonates with me because I was temporarily destroyed when my father passed away, however, I refused to let my grief conquer me. I relate to Santiago because his gain of the marlin contrasts my loss. After 84 days without a fish, the old man hooks a marlin. The task of reeling in the fish requires all of his physical and mental strength, much like my situation did. However, just as Santiago captured his marlin, I overcame my depression and, thus, captured my beast by being able to resume a more joyful life.
