Una Erickson Cameron Monroe English 4 Honors 07 May 2024 How Hurricane Katrina Exposed Racism Nearly 20 years ago, Hurricane Katrina impacted many cities throughout the southern United States. As a result of this, the majority of citizens who were negatively affected were African American citizens living in lower income communities. Through the Marxist lens, I will explain how Hurricane Katrina exposed racism throughout these marginalized communities. Many people argue that Hurricane Katrina caused the government to neglect most victims before and after the disaster, primarily due to the fact that most victims were lower class African Americans. According to the Pew Research Center, “Two-thirds (66%) said that “the government’s response to
