The American Revolution gave hopes to many slaves and ignited their dream of freedom and independence .The hope of freedom was also fueled by the news of Haitian revolution, which became the first Black Country to attain freedom. But the hopes and dreams were shattered when the new constitution was drafted.
Slaveholding states in the southern states of the United States wanted to maintain or expand the slave trade and wanted no federal restriction against the flourishing of the slave trade. The politicians in these states threatened to leave the union, if slavery was not protected. But because of the emancipation laws in these states many African Americans were enslaved for a long time. Some of slave owners did not honor these laws and were challenged by the African Americans in the court to seek their freedom. As mentioned earlier, the southern states expanded slavery due to the growth of cotton plantation. However, in cities like Baltimore, the because of the decrease in the slave population the concentration of Blacks increased. Blacks found opportunities in cities like Baltimore, as jobs were plentiful, as it became a center for cultivation of wheat and other grains. The large free population also provided shelter for runaways. But the fear of slavery was still fresh ,as one of the slave named Prosser Gabriel lead a plot to overturn slavery . The plot named Gabriel’s revolution was unsuccessful as two people disclosed the plot to their masters and alerted the governor. Due to this rebellion, free blacks were suspected of helping the rebels promote their plot.
