Lysander’s first main characteristic is loyalty. Through the play, he is a model of a constant lover for Hermia, except when influenced by the love potion. Lysander, in the beginning of the play, is faced with Hermia’s father, Egeus, who wants her to marry Demetrius.

In the beginning of the play, he says a lot of things that would fit under this characteristic. Probably one of the most famous quotes, “The course of love never did run smooth”, was a great example of this characteristic. It is a very straightforward and honest quote that displays his personality. Much later on in the story, when Theseus and Egeus discover the young Athenians, he tells them both that he was the one that encouraged Hermia to elope with him. This was a very brave thing to say in the situation, which also enraged Egeus, just as Lysander hoped to do.
