Hague was raised to be Lutheran to protect him from Nazi persecution. In 1937 he fled to Italy before he could be inducted into the Hitler youth movement. He attended a music conservatory in Rome. Afterwards he obtained a scholarship to the University of Cincinnati and moved the the United States in 1939. When he moved to America he didn’t know how to speak a word of English. He took the last name of his adopted father Elliott B. Hague. In 1942 he graduated and served in the US military than two years before embarking on a career as a composer. In 1955 he celebrated his first Broadway success “Plain and Fancy.” Also in 1955 he married his wife Renee Orin, who was born in Slatington, Pennsylvania. She was an actress who stared in the Broadway musical Fame with Hague. She died August 26th 2000, she was 73. In 1959 Hague won two Tony awards for Best Composer and for his music as part of the Best Musical win. On November 12th 2001, Hague died of cancer at the age of 81.
