Academics and hip-hop exhibit a complex relationship. There is a current stereotype that hip-hop and rappers are anti-academic. Rappers will insult their past teachers, insult their past school, and even boast about their bad grades. Take for example, Kanye West who has done all of this and more. For example, in his song Good Morning, Kanye raps about getting D’s on tests he cheated on, and criticizes universities for stealing students “steetness.” Keep in mind that when this song released, West was a vocal, and proud, college dropout. His first three albums were all college themed and heavily criticized academia. Meanwhile, fifteen years before Kanye West would release an album, Afrika Bambaataa adds a fifth element to hip-hop: knowledge.
