Chapter 1
In this chapter, the book introduces you to the setting and the major characters. The setting is described, Salinas California, during the 1930. Lennie and George are described next. They drink from a pool of dirty water, and then continue on their journey. The problem of Lennie wanting to pet things is shown as well. George explains why they have no job and are on their current journey. The reasons they have no job is because Lennie scared a women by petting her dress in the town they had their previous job. Lennie also kills a mouse to pet it, showing his tendency to pet things. George also shares with Lennie their dream of the future, to own a ranch, with rabbits for Lennie. The relationship between Lennie and George is focused on in this chapter.

They meet and old man and his dog. The old man’s name is Candy. Later, they head in for an interview with The Boss, beforehand, George reminds Lennie not to talk during the interview. George says that he and Lennie were cousins, and that they left their previous job because they were not needed anymore. The Boss is confused by the relationship they have, even if they are cousins. After the interview, they meet the boss’s son. His name is Curley, a name derived from his hair. His wife also lives on the ranch. However they quickly notice something is not right with his wife when she gives “the eye” to just about everyone on the ranch. George tells Lennie to avoid Curley, and hide by the river if anything bad happens. Soon they meet Slim, how tells another new character, Carlson, about a new litter of puppies he has. They talk about giving one of the puppies as a replacement for Candy’s old dog. Then Curley comes looking for his wife, before the dinner bell
