Over the course of this semester, I observed three diverse elementary general music teachers. The teachers I observed were Jeff Leonhardt, Amy Davidson, and Rachel Pollard. All three of these teachers have different backgrounds, school situations, job requirements, and years of experience. With all of this in mind, there were also many consistencies between these three teachers including instrument and solfege use, daily class routines, and specific objections and goals for each class. Jeff Leonhardt was the first teacher that I observed this semester. He teaches at Streams Elementary School in Upper St Clair, which consists of grades K-4. Each grade has music class once a week. His main instrument is guitar and he incorporates it into his lessons with all grade levels, for various lessons and purposes. She received her undergraduate degree in Music Education from Clarion University and her master’s degree from Duquesne University. She is also certified in Kodály teaching. Her school includes grade levels K-5. Each grade, with the exception of Kindergarten, has music class once a week. Kindergarten only has music class once every other week. For our second visit to her school, Mrs. Davidson invited us to teach a warm-up to her fifth and third grade classes. For fifth grade we taught a recorder activity that went along with the song “Out in the Garden”. We began by having the students sing the song and reviewing notes and fingerings on the recorder. We then split the students into groups and they sang the song and played the last few notes of each phrase on the recorder. For third grade, we taught them the song “Great Big House in New Orleans”.
