Speak, by Laurie Anderson was a book about a girl who was very misunderstood and in turn was hated and made fun of, and until she could get passed that her life was going downhill. After reading Speak, I was pleased with the outcome of the book, in the beginning I was frustrated with how she was “handling” things but in the end I was happy with how everything worked out. Reading this book reminded me of things people sometimes forget: You need to tell people about things that are happening, or that have already happened, keep other people’s feelings in mind, don’t keep things to yourself if you or someone else is in trouble, and be responsible.
From my personal experience, going through school isn’t always a smooth ride. You get in fights and your get hurt, but more often than not the situation could have been handled in a nicer fashion. In Speak Melinda was being bullied for something she didn’t even do. People everywhere need to be nice, you don’t always know what the other person is going through. Melinda was drunk so she couldn’t defend herself from an upperclassman Andy and ended up being raped. She was scared so she called the police and ended up getting everyone busted for underage drinking (Anderson 133-136). Melinda’s parent’s had no idea any of this had happened so when Melinda lost all her friends, stopped talking, and let her grades fall she just took the punishment. Her parents didn’t think twice about why Melinda was acting like this. Now I have never had something like this happen to me, not on such a large scale, but I have made mistakes that have caused me to loose friends but talking things out with them helped us not have such harsh feelings towards one
