“The Declaration of Independence” The new United States would become the nation among all nations. As celebrated now, independence, then provided the political means to achieve a social end, that social end being a better life for Americans, their new nation acting as an exemplar in the larger world . The Declaration of Independence was a pivotal time in the United Colonies and on July 4, 1776, this historic document was signed by 56 political leaders. Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better .
