How Vietnam Changed My Life

Jackie Robinson once said “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” Traveling to Vietnam changed my life forever. In 2012 I visited three different orphanages while in Vietnam. They gave me a new appreciation for what I took for granted. Citizenship, teamwork, and persistence have helped me break through both language and culture barriers. I decided to have a fundraiser for the children at Tam Ky baby orphanage. I designed a raffle, which raised $1100 for Tam Ky baby orphanage. A few weeks later weeks later on April thirtieth my mom, Nana, and I boarded Korean Air, flight 036, for a fourteen and a half hour flight. After we landed in Korea, we boarded one last five-hour plane ride to Da Nang, Vietnam. A few days after we arrived in Vietnam, we loaded the truck with the milk that was to be delivered to Tam Ky. The teacher worked for absolutely no money just to give these kids an education. Isn't that amazing? The children who attended learned how to play the guitar, sing, speak, and interact with each other. While most of the children were blind or were mentally disabled, they were learning how to write. Most of them could not see what they were doing, but they eager to learn. We played with the students and one of them sang for us while the teacher played his guitar. He had a beautiful voice. Some of the students lived with the teacher because their parents gave them up at a young age due to their disability. The classroom had rotting wood benches and desks and one plain blackboard. There was no technology just worn down and deteriorated notebooks. The students sat tightly compacted next to each other just to make sure there was always room for new students.They were thrilled with the small McDonalds toys we brought
