Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619. The Africans were seized from a Spanish vessel and sold for supplies. Anthony Johnson was originally named “Antonio a Negro” was one of the first African Americans in history of what’s known as The United States. He was brought to the colony to work tobacco along the Virginia River. The white colonial society began to limit the opportunities for African Americans in year of 1640.
