Howard Bowen had many career occupations that contributed to him being successful in higher education. These roles are important recognize when it comes to his philosophy because they gave him experience in the field of higher education and outside of it. Bowen received his Ph.D. in 1935, he started as an instructor in economics at the University of Iowa. While Bowen was at University of Iowa held many titles. Outside of higher education, Bowen was chief economist of the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation of the U.S Congress from 1942 to 1945 and economist of the Wall Street Bank the Irving Trust Company.
Bowen also taught Williams College and Claremont Graduate School. He served as dean of the Business School at the University of
