Miss Watson and The Widow are a couple of these people that value academic knowledge. When Huck Finn first starts living with Miss Watson and The Widow they aren’t always very kind to him but as the days continue and Huck Finn starts to follow the rules of society and gains some academic knowledge. Huck Finn even says that The Widow says he “was coming along, slow but sure, and doing very satisfactory” (Pg. 14). Even with all of Miss Watsons and the Widows academic knowledge they still can’t keep Huck Finn from his abusive father. Huck Finn on the other hand has lots of worldly knowledge and uses it to his advantage. Huck Finns worldly knowledge gets him away from his father when nobody else could he also planned out his fake murder so nobody would look for him for very long. His worldly knowledge also helped him when he snuck into town dressed as a girl to find out what was going on outside of his island where he lives with Jim. These are ideas that people with only academic knowledge would ever think of. The theme changes because in the beginning of the novel it seemed as though the novel favored the academic knowledge but the more the story proceeded the more it started to show the value of worldly knowledge. Academic knowledge vs. worldly knowledge is very back and forward, the theme shows that some people are good at one or the other and sometimes even both, but both have values that can help a person in one way or another. Sometimes both are needed to complete one
