One of the most climax filled deceptions in the novel was from Tom Sawyer. Tom was a sneaky kid but in this situation he didn’t really comprehend the impacts of his actions. On the contrary I don’t believe that Huck’s lies were bad. They weren’t cons for money, or games for entertainment, but just false identities to survive in a brutal world for an orphan with a runaway slave friend. Huck lied to strangers to find vital information. When Tom deceived Mrs. Loftus by claiming to be Sarah Williams and saying “‘My mother’s down sick, and out of money and everything,and I come to tell my uncle Abner Moore. He lives at the upper end of the town, I hain’t even before. Do you know him?’”(Twain 62) it was only to find out what the town thought about Huck’s disappearance. Later on Huck tells the Grangerfords that he is George Jackson because they mistook him a Shepherdson and he need to save his life. The Shepherdsons are their family enemy and he would of been killed so he spun another story because he needed a place to stay. He thought Jim drowned so he was just doing the best he could to try to survive. Finally when Huck stumbles upon the Phelps family he is again in need of a home because Jim has been captured. When they think he is Tom, luck falls right into his lap because he could pretend to Tom for as long as he needed. Tom was his best friend and he knew everything there is to know about him so Huck just went along with it even though the lie slowly began to increase.
