Low self-esteem due to beliefs one has can create difficult situations when they make one perceive things differently than reality. In the short story “Some Are So Lucky” by Hugh Garner, Garner develops the idea that when ones personal beliefs cause feelings of low self worth, their perspective becomes clouded. As a result of this, one will perceive situations incorrectly, ultimately worsening their self-esteem. Rod Murphy, a middle-aged man who works in the insurance industry, meets up with an old flame, Ethel Walton, after fifteen years of separation. Due to the meeting, he begins to reminisce about the past, remembering how infatuated he was and how Ethel did not reciprocate his feelings. He mentions that “her looks hadn’t changed a bit” (Garner 118) and that “her beauty had been preserved” (118). These quotations demonstrate how deep Rod’s love was for Ethel and that he still feels the same way because they show that he thinks she looks as beautiful as she did when they met. At this point in the story, it is clear that Rod loved and continues to love Ethel, however, Ethel’s feelings are less intense than Rod’s because Ethel wasn’t “sure who [he] was” (118) as opposed to Rod who recognized Ethel immediately. Ethel's slow recognition of someone who was obviously deeply in love with her demonstrated to the readers that Rod valued her more than she valued him. In the first part of the story, readers are introduced to Ethel’s rather outspoken nature when she comments that Rod had ‘“grown a lot heavier since”’ (118) they knew each other. This quote demonstrates that Ethel lacks a filter and doesn’t care if she hurts others, and the fact that Rod isn’t fazed in the least by this comment shows that he let a lot slide while they were
