Hugh Morton is a nationally known photographer, and developer. He joined the United States Army as a photographer during World War II. After Morton came back from war he worked as a sports photographer at the University of North Carolina. When his grandfather passed away, Morton inherited around 4,000 acres of land near Linville and Grandfather Mountain. He was then best known as a property owner of Grandfather Mountain. He created Grandfather Mountain into a popular tourist attraction the “Mile High Swinging Bridge”. Grandfather Mountain was his favorite place and Mildred the Bear was his favorite subject. My favorite photograph taken by Hugh Morton is the Charlotte Skyline photographed from Grandfather Mountain in 1993.
