Ecuador & its main cities and the neighbouring countries.
Ecuadorans live in extreme poverty and cannot meet their nutritional requirements even if they spend everything they have on food. Poverty is higher in rural areas with 35 % of its population in poverty. Ecuador is a developing agricultural country that has employed a huge proportion of the population in its agricultural industry. Many rural Ecuadorans feed their families with the produce of the farms that they own. Only a small proportion of Ecuadoran territory has been retrieved for farming and the unretrieved land is used as forest reserves and wildlife habitats. Over time increased property of lands and improved yields with the help of the government’s support program, have caused rapid growth of agriculture in Ecuador. Agriculture employs 32 percent in the workforce and provides 13-17 percent of the gross national product for its agricultural industry.
Ecuador’s main economic activity is agriculture. Traditionally, Ecuador’s agricultural products are bananas, coffee, tea, rice, sugar, corn, potatoes and tropical fruit. Livestock raising is widespread. The agricultural sector of the economy presents potential for further development and growth. The government's agricultural policy focuses on integration into the World Trade Organization, import tariffs, and the lack of credit in the agricultural sector.
Sustainability
Sustainability is the society’s ability to satisfy its needs and wants without harming the future generation’s needs and wants. In Ecuador their main focus is on their economic development and feeding their own families but aspects such as Environmental, Social and political aspects are things that needs to be considered for the country to improve their level of development.Environmental
Agriculture is defined as a managed system of crops, livestock, soil management, forest resources (productive use, goods & services) and water resources (irrigation), including land use and land use change. Climate change includes both mitigation and adaptation activities within the agricultural industry. On the mitigation side, the focus is on the potential to reduce green house gas emissions by the different provinces. On the adaptation side, the focus is on the potential to build resilience to climate and to increase the adaptive capacity through sustainable management of agriculture and other complementary factors (e.g. financial instruments).
Stopping deforestation is critical and reducing vulnerability to climate change is very important in the agricultural industry in Ecuador, considering the role the that the industry plays in food security and livelihoods of rural Ecuadorans.
In Ecuador it has been conclude that crops are vulnerable to climate change and livestock, aquaculture and fisheries is affected by soil erosion. According to the Ministry of Agriculture,
