Pyongyang cannot provide adequate standard of living to its citizen and deprives them of political, civil rights in spite of them ratifying the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. People in North Korea cannot even express their opinion independently as freedoms of speech, the press, and assembly do not exist there which is serious violation of article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Judicial independence is absent there as government regularly interfere in the judiciary process. Citizens cannot even chose their own government due to lack of voting rights. The government fails to provide religious liberties to its citizen and persecute religiously active people which goes against the basic idea of article 18 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. North Korea, a so-called socialist state, does not even hesitate to execute its citizen for stealing their property. The high number of political prisoners, who have to go through torture and other mistreatment, remains a serious human rights concern for global
