Some people wrongly assume that human trafficking only occurs in impoverished countries. However, human trafficking is even a problem in our own society, and according to the Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, “it affects almost every country in the world” (“Human Trafficking”). Vanessa Bouche wrote an article about sex trafficking; she has been researching about human trafficking for almost two decades. In this particular article, she collected data from more than 900 federal prosecutions of sex trafficking in the United States, so this shows there are countless cases of trafficking even our own country (Bouche). Sex trafficking is definitely the most noticeable form of human trafficking, especially in the United States. There is an abundance of women and girls that are sold into this slavery business in our country, and Bouche writes in her article that “99% of the victims are females, while the traffickers and buyers are mostly male,” (Bouche). The poor victims are forced to lose their human dignity because “men are buying and selling women and girls as commodities, objects and instruments for their profit and pleasure,” (Bouche). This quote says how the traffickers consider the victims as items that can be purchased, rather than human beings with emotions and a family. “Although some sex or labor trafficking victims are brought from other countries, about 80 percent are U.S. citizens,” (Nelson). Victims can be from other countries, but there are also human trafficking victims that come from the United States (Nelson). “The girls that we see that become our adult trafficking victims start out as minor trafficking victims. They had a crappy home life, and they're out there looking for someone to make it better," (Nelson). These people have grown up with a miserable home life. They are looking for opportunities, and “social conditions as poverty, unemployment, and lack of opportunity can also make people vulnerable to trafficking,” (“Human Trafficking”). Sadly, these are the types of people that human traffickers prey on. They do not tell the victims the whole truth, and they are able to recruit the victims to work for them. Then, once they get into the slavery business, it is difficult to get out. No one deserves to be enslaved, so more should be done to help the people that have become
