The historical emergency response event chosen is Hurricane Wilma. The first part of the paper will include a summary of the event. The second part of the paper will list the leadership practices with practical examples that were least exercised and what negative impacts resulted. The third part of the paper will be on what leaders could have done to affect a better outcome. The fourth part of the paper will discuss myself in a leadership role during this event and the leadership tendencies that would have to be monitored. The storm formed on Oct. 18, 2005, and brought death and devastation to the Caribbean, Mexico and Florida. This was an event that was personally expeiences by myself. Hurricane Wilma clobbered South Florida on Monday, October 24, 2005, with surprising strength left the entire region devastated. All of South Florida,knew about the storm, but too few took it seriously. Nobody was doing nothing at first to prepare because it is such headache to do so. Many did prepare, but most did nothing until the minute. You can only prepare so much when you only have a few hours to do so and no supplies. It had been the fifth major hurricane, defined as one with winds of 111 mph or greater, to hit Florida in 19 months. Hurricane Wilma was unique because of its wide wake, causing almost universal power outages and major destruction in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, which have traditionally taken turns bearing the brunt of previous storms. They were on the radio and television showing how they are prerpared themselves. They showed how they have their supplies for their families, such as, food and water. They showed how they have gotten their batteries, gas, generators, and money. They showed how they put away the stuff in front of their yard and put on shutters. They showed how they know their evactuation plan and route. The problem was that the hurricane threat occurs so much in Florida, there are many that don't do it. They feel it is just a waist of energy, money, stress, and time. The only ones that seem to follow are the new residents to Florida and the people on vacation. This is mainly due to them being told to prepare or to leave by the hotels. Kouzes and Posner
