Demographic Characteristics Demographically speaking, HCWC is very diverse. HCWC consists of a staff of about 40-50 individuals. Their staff is multigenerational, with some staff members being hired just out of college, and others nearing retirement age. While a majority of the staff are female, they do have quite a few men on staff, including 2 on Melissa Rodriguez’s specific team, and 6 men on HCWC’s Board of Directors. A common theme that both Rodriguez and Kathryn Tucker expressed is that representation matters, and HCWC wants their staff and their Board to reflect their clients. For counselors, or staff members who will be working directly with clients, a master’s level degree in some form of counseling or social work is preferred. This also applies to licensure; licensed professional counselors (LPC), licensed master’s social workers (LMSW), licensed clinical social workers (LCSW), and licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT) are some of the preferred licensures for direct service staff members. For staff members who do not work in direct service with clients, or volunteers, specific degrees or licensure is not always necessary. According to Tucker and Rodriguez, these traits include, and are not limited to, compassion, open-mindedness, active listening, and communication. Two traits that were strongly emphasized by both Tucker and Rodriguez were flexibility and empathy. Flexibility, because clients at HCWC are wild cards, and both Rodriguez and Tucker expressed that there is no way to know what each day is going to look like. Flexibility is also important in crisis situations, which happens periodically at HCWC. Empathy plays another vital role in a social workers toolkit.
