A major motivator for applying to an Oral Health course came from my voluntary experience at ‘Sunset’ rest home. During one of my visits, I had a conversation with an elderly resisdent who talked about how lucky todays generation of New Zealand is to be able to receive free dental checkups at a young age and plnelty of eduction surrounding dental health. She put emphasis on the fact that she would not have lost her teeth so early in life if not for early intervention and oral health advice. This conversation put things into perspective for me and made me realize that by persuing a profession in oral health I would have the chance make dramatic lifelong impacts on people’s lives by helping them maintain good oral health.
Furthermore, a recent epidemiology lecture given by Dr Jonathan Broadent further reinforced my decision to consider a profession in oral health. Dr Broadbent talked about the way bad oral health increased the risk of heart disease which certainly made me realize how important the job of an oral hygienist really is and how much of an impact hygienists have within health care system. if I was given the opportunity to address a person’s oral hygiene; I would be able to make a significant impact on their lives in the long run

However, despite being unable to take part in work experience at a dental clinic, I did mnage to talk to a few local dental hygienist’s about their day to day workings. Each one of them talked about thier job in terms of ‘prepping’ a patients mouth before the dentist comes in to check the patient. This involves conducting a health assement on structures such as the gums and teeth, recgnoising and treating gum disease, observing and recording changes in dental status, taking xrays and most importantly educating pateints on the condition of their mouth and providing them with information on maintinaing good oral
