Hypatia was born in 370 AD, in Alexandria, Egypt. She is the daughter of Theon of Alexandria, the last professor at the university of Alexandria. There is little to nothing known about her mother, but it is believed that she had a brother named Epiphanius, but he may have only been Theon's favorite pupil. Hypatia's father Theon is the one who tutored her in all of her studies. He taught her math, astronomy, and philosophy. Hypatia worked with her father on some of his commentaries. Some people think that Theon's III book of his version of Ptolemy's Almagest, was actually the work of Hypatia herself.

She dressed in the clothes of a scholar, which are very different than what a woman was supposed to wear in her times. Normal women wore dresses. She had her own chariot and she drove it freely around the city, which is so different from the behavior that women were supposed to have. Hypatia also had a very good political influence in the city, especially with Orestes who was the Roman governor of Alexandria.
