The Crucible by Arthur Miller is set in colonial Massachusett, which is known for being full of Puritans. Puritans are known for being a morally good group of people, or so most think. The town of Salem is full of Puritan hypocrites who lie, commit adultery, and even send innocent people to death. No one is safe from sin in this town. Typical Puritan beliefs are love, forgiveness, and compassion, but in The Crucible the Puritans lie, cheat, and judge others.
Abby manipulated every girl in Salem to lie, and it created a domino effect on the whole town. Reverend Parris never showed a bit of compassion or speaks of the forgiveness of God. Rev. Parris, along with the rest of the town, was very judgmental to those accused. A pastor should be a loving, compassionate man, not a judgmental mean one. Another hypocritical action in The Crucible is that John had an affair with the young Abby during his wife's time of sickness. In turn because of John's affair Elizabeth isn't able to forgive him. Even though this play was set in 1692 hypocrisy is still very alive today. Hypocrites will always be in the world. People judge others actions, even when they do stuff just as morally wrong, or even worse. Everyone deals with hypocrites at least once in their life, even if it’s not on as large of a scale as in The Crucible. If people are going to judge others without first judging themselves they are in the wrong. Especially in the area we live in, I know some people who’ll yell at anyone who says “Oh my God’ but will cuss up a storm. Religion is just one of the many things people are hypocritical about, school, relationships, working, anything really is something someone could be hypocritical
