Case Description
I Believe is a nonprofit organization founded by Eddie in Lincoln High School out of the purpose of enabling at-risk youth to gain academic success by providing counselling, coaching, and tutoring. As a friendly person with a magnetic personality, Eddie worked closely with his partner Felipe Agular, and they were able to successfully reached to 47 kids in the first 3 years. I Believe was a rather small NGO, with Eddie and Felipe, 3 board members, and 4 volunteers, there had been a difficult time to balance administrative operation and serving the kid, especially since Eddie was greatly in demand as a public speaker and fund raiser. Given the current condition of I Believe, in my opinion, the possible problematic pieces are leadership style and failure in being an effective team. Therefore, solutions I proposed are mainly related to strengthening team effectiveness by improving leadership style, and resolving conflict. In fact, scholars and practitioners cannot come up with a common definition for leadership (Northouse, 2012). Bass (1990), suggested that leadership is the focus of group process, that is, the leader is the center of group change and activity, and is in represent of the will of the group, while another scholar consider it as a combination of special personalities or characteristics that leaders have. There is another belief that leadership is an act leaders perform to guide the group (Northouse, 2012). It is mentioned in this case that Eddie was the only staff member, and based on the case description, he was a bright person with a charming personality who decided to give back to the society by helping at-risk youth like he used to be when he was young, and successfully achieved this by developing a strategy for reaching the kids. These factors make him qualified as a leader as he fitted of at least 6 of the 20 traits, including intelligent, determined, ambitious, courageous, loyal, and independent.
