Family provides a crucial bond of support, growth, standards and overall discipline. If the parents, guardians, and relatives of these children are forcibly sent back, the upbringing of those children will be altered. This could severely interrupt the developmental process. Trump’s policy could affect the parent-child relationships in negative ways. According to the textbook “How Children Develop” by Robert Siegler, “Families fulfill several vital functions, including ensuring the survival of children to maturity, providing the means for children to acquire skills need to be economically productive, and teaching children the basic values of the culture” (Siegler, 470). Thus by deporting parents, guardians, siblings and relatives the government would be doing a disservice to the development of children. Children cultivate a long range of emotions throughout their existence. By not having their families there the risk is a life of antisocial behavior. This includes isolation, hostility, quietness and negative internalization of emotions. The relationship between parent and child is pivotal to the child’s emotional development and growth. As Siegler says “Children are securely attached- that is who have high quality, trusting relationships with their parents- tend to show more positive emotion and less social anxiety” (Siegler, 411). Therefore, kids need an attachment with parents in order to do better in society. This parent child relationships assists the child in being more social, more positive, less fearful and angry, more open and honest and lastly more in tune with their thoughts and expressions. By deporting children’s parents they are going to be depriving children of this emotional progress. This can be seen in the article when it says “I have children crying in the classroom, in my office. When I ask why they, they have expressed to me that they don’t want their moms to be apprehended and taken away from them” (Kamenetz, 2017).
