In "I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read" Francine Prose writes that books should not be used to teach moral values, instead to look at the content and structure of the books. This form of teaching is something I agree with because, I do not think that schools should decide what is ethical and that the individual should decide their moral code. Prose’s idea of teaching is also better for the student, because looking at the words and structure of great writing will help improve vocabulary and rhetoric. Reading works like Prose’s essay can help show people how to form their own opinions and defend those opinions.
