Going to the hospital can be a very frightful thing. To some the hospital represents the unknown. A person goes to the hospital with the intention to be healed and protected. Unfortunately the hospital represents a big petri dish. In the hospital there are so many germs and bacteria that live in there. Healthcare associated infections is a huge concern for patients and hospital workers. Healthcare professional should take the responsibility to maintain the health of the patients as well as their coworkers. Being a third year medical student he had a lot of obstacles against him. In his rotation he was with a very busy attending who did not have time. Manuel did not let these obstacles stand in his way. When the opportunity presented itself to assist Ventilated patients he found research to back up his knowledge. When he learned from his friend that ventilated patient was being worked on by individuals not wearing gloves, he knew he had to something. He knew that by having evidence-based practice he was not alone. In 2001 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) instructed all healthcare professionals to deliver patient care through interdisciplinary teams that uses evidence based practice. Evidence based practice uses previous clinical findings and applies it to individual patients (Facchiano & Snyder, 2012). “Evidence based practice is a problem solving approach for clinical practice that integrates the conscientious use of best evidence (internal & external) in combination with a clinician’s expertise as well as patient preferences and values to make decisions about the type of care that is provided (Facchiano & Synder, 2012).” With evidence-based practice practioners are able to make critical decision based off research that was previous
