The client would first describe the pattern in which he strokes his hair, finds a hair strand, twirls the hair strand between his fingers and thumb, reached down to the root of the hair, pulls out the hair, looks at the hair pulled out, and then drops the hair to the floor. The therapist would ask the client about the antecedents and consequences related to hair pulling. Identifying the antecedents that may have stimulus control over the hair pulling will help note any social reinforcements that can be incorporated during treatment and maintenance of treatment.
