“Envy is ignorance, Imitation is Suicide.” The story, “Self Reliance,” by Ralph Waldo Emerson is a transcendentalist essay containing the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow their own instincts and ideas.Transcendentalism focuses on being original and self-dependent. In this time period, everyone needs to be comfortable with them in order to succeed in life. The quote, “Envy is ignorance, Imitation is Suicide,” means if you envy someone or are jealous of them then you are a fool because no one is perfect and everyone has problems. If you imitate someone then you are sacrificing your own individuality. In other words, don’t try to conform to the status quo. Someone I know once was envious of other people and they tried killing themselves. Also, in the movie, Mean Girls, two of the characters named Gretchen and Cady are envious of Regina George.
