Niccolo Ammaniti’s Im not Scared leaves the reader thinking when you finish the book. The story is based on the life of a nine year old boy named Michele who is living in a small country village named Aqua Terverse. He discovers an old abandoned farmhouse where he finds a kidnapped boy chained up in a hole; this secret will change his life forever. The book can have many different effects on different people. It is quite disturbing at times but it leaves you thinking and puts you into the characters shoes. Since Michele is only 9, he is not as intelligent as a teenager so he does make some odd choices but it helps you understand the themes of the book and what characters represent them.
Michele implies that he is not scared of anything in the real world, but really he is entirely afraid. When he tells himself that he’s “not scared of anything” he still is scared he is just trying to flush out the fear that was racing around in his head. Monsters and imaginative creatures like the “boogyman” are Michele’s worst fear, and with these thoughts going through his head it would make him scared, hence why he tells himself he’s not. The adults have committed a horrible and selfish deed which they wish to not get caught for, all for money.
