Immunizations Promotion and Education Literature Review
The topic of this literature review is the importance of immunization in children. This is an important issue because not getting vaccinated can lead to preventable illnesses and death in all age groups. Also, parents choosing not to vaccinate their children is on the rise in the United States. This literature review is intended for nurses, nursing students, and other healthcare workers as a tool for education for patients and parents. Due to the reduced cases of diseases prevented by vaccinations, parents are focusing their attention on stories of severe reactions to vaccinations. (Anderson, 2015). Parents have many concerns with vaccination including the ingredients such as aluminum and formaldehyde, fear of overwhelming their child’s immune system, the “link” between vaccination and autism, exposure vs. vaccination, and herd immunity.
Vaccinations have aluminum in it as an adjuvant. The reason this adjuvant is used is that when it is combined with an attenuated virus, it produces a better immune response than the vaccine does alone. (Anderson, 2015). According to this article, “inactivated vaccines often require a substance to help bolster the immune response” (Anderson, 2015, p. 5). This defines what an adjuvant is.
