Brunelleschi’s design of the dome atop the Florence cathedral was one of a kind during that time period. During the Renaissance period, the only way to build such a magnificent dome was the traditional Gothic style which was done using flying buttresses and pointed arches. The overseers of the project didn't want to use the design but were boggled as to how to build such a massive dome that had to start 180 feet about ground and 150 feet across. After many proposed ideas, Brunelleschi was the only one with a design that worked. His idea was to build two domes. A smaller one inside the bigger to support the larger ones weight.
