Imperialism has many causes, including reasons involving politics, military, religion, culture, and economics. Each country wanted to be the leader, the one in control, of as much of the world as they could get their hands on, they gave more power to countries with more territory no matter how big, or developed they were. Because of these ideas of imperialism, a country's military was one of their top concerns. Other countries were hungry for power and would do whatever it would take to be number one, so a strong military was essential. Imperialism has been a hot topic in China for many years. One of the consequences of imperialism in China was the opium war. The opium war was a battle between England and China. England would send China opium despite its negative impact on the economy. In the year 1792, opium was banned in China. England was smuggling opium from India into the Chinese ports, which had a dramatic effect on the Chinese economy. The opium was being sent and was not stopping so in hopes of this economic downfall, Lin Zeux, a politician, wrote a letter to Queen Victoria, asking her to stop the opium but she never responded and China had to resort to destroying the opium as it came in. This act led to millions of dollars of opium in the ocean. Another result of Imperialism in China was the boxer's rebellion. The Boxer Rebellion attacked Christian schools, churches, and missionary workers. In the long term, this did not benefit China and was overall bad for the economy.
