1. The Duke of Zhou served for seven years as regent before the young King Cheng ascended the throne as the first Zhou ruler (1043-1021 BCE) of the Zhou Dynasty (1043-256 BCE), celebrated in Chinese history as the golden age of governance and culture. The Duke was also credited as the author of I Ching (The Classic of Changes), a seminal text in Chinese culture. He was also revered as a cultural giant, on the same pedestal as the highly influential political philosopher and sage Confucius (551-479 BCE) who had held his great predecessor in very high esteem.

Dr Sun formulated the Three People’s Principles (San Min Zhuyi) of Nationalism (Minzu), People’s Power (Minquan), and People’s Livelihood/Welfare (Minsheng), to guide the Chinese Revolution spearheaded by the Zhongguo Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) founded in 1905, with overseas branches established in both Singapore and Penang in 1906 when Dr Sun came to seek funding for the revolutionaries in China. Mao Tse-tung had more or less the same ideas to remake, modernize and strengthen China for the Chinese people, such as the mass line to harness the “boundless creative power” of the masses, who are “the real heroes” (1941/p. 227), people’s war: “The richest source of power to wage war lies in the masses of the people” (May 1938/p. 173), the People’s Army “to stand firmly with the Chinese people and to serve them whole-heartedly” (December 1929/p. 193), and in serving the people “to proceed in all cases from the interests of the people” (24 April 1945/p. 321). In a statement to commemorate Dr Sun Yat-sen November 1956 (p. 337), Mao said: “Things develop ceaselessly. It is only forty-five years since the Revolution of 1911, but the face of China has completely changed. In another forty-five years, that is, in the year 2001, or the beginning of the 21st century, China will have an even greater change. She will have become a powerful socialist industrial country.
