LaVaughn’s life in the beginning of the book merely consists of school, homework, and sleep. LaVaughn asked her mom when she was little if she could go to college; which was the start of her daily cycle of school, homework, and sleep. When she begins to babysit for Jolly’s children, it is a little difficult for LaVaughn to convince her mom that this job will be good for her. Her mom has a hesitancy toward this job and lists many cons such as, “That’s a lot of changing LaVaughn.” and also “all the wiping and the feeding and your social studies and your math and all too.” ( 18). Her mom is always focused on her education, and how whatever she does will affect it. She doesn’t want LaVaughn to take a job if it will impact her education negatively. Her mom is also worried about her ability to multitask and handle the job.
