Luckily, the Berkshires has plenty of “spur of the moment” hikes and trails. The Appalachian Trail streams right across South County and is usually less populated than places like Monument Mountain Trail in Great Barrington or Umpachene Falls in Mill River. On Monument Mountain there are easy and hard trails to choose from, however, it is definitely a hike where effort and lots of water is needed. On the other hand, Umpachene falls is a relaxing area with swings for children, BBQs, picnic tables, and a shallow stream to swim in. A slight walk from the picnic area is the cascading falls where one can walk or climb up the rocks surrounding the water. Swimming, picnicking, and fishing are all encouraged here.
