By definition, professionalism is the “conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person” (Merriam-Webster). Professionalism in nursing is extremely important because a professional nurse possesses the knowledge and the skillfulness to practice and organize his or her work correctly while being able to fulfill that work on the highest level. Lack of professionalism while in nursing school can lead to academic misconduct that may translate into unsafe patient care and nursing practices.

By giving other students in the nursing program the opportunity to view my answers on the pre-clinical paperwork, I aided and abetted academic dishonesty, I have taken away their chance to learn the material and given those particular students an unfair advantage in the clinical setting. For example, if a fellow classmate were to ask for help on a paper by asking me to send her mine, the right thing to do would be to politely decline sending mine and offer to proof read and edit his or her paper.
During the course of the semester, I would like to think that my academic performance has been on par or above average for the cohort. With such progress, I do not want to sacrifice all of this hard work in order to help a classmate commit academic dishonesty. To prevent doing such a thing again, I will put myself on an academic self-prescribed plan of improvement.
Overall, it can be seen that maintaining professionalism in nursing is essential to the profession. Nurses put themselves in positions of trust each and every day, and therefore it is essential that the nursing students maintain academic integrity, professionalism, practice safe nursing and patient care.
