Introduction
In this report task I will make recommendations and justify any improvements for improving physical resources within Blackburn College and I will also say how these recommendations meet the legal requirements that Blackburn College have to comply with.
What is meant by effective and efficient management of physical resources?
This is the process of using a business’ resources in the most efficient way possible. These resources can include touchable resources such as goods and equipment’s, financial resources, labour resources such as employees. The management of physical resources can include ideas like making sure one has enough physical resources for one’s business, but not an excess amount so that products will not get used, or making sure that people are given a task that will keep them busy and not have too much down time.
Use reusable cups and cutlery instead of disposables
A recommendation that could be used throughout Blackburn College in order for them to reduce waste is in the cafeterias that are around the College campus, they could use reusable cups and cutlery instead of disposables. This would help them to reduce waste because disposables are just thrown in the bin after they are done with, so if reusable cups and cutlery are used instead then they can be washed and used again and again, which would be helping to save money for the college as well as reducing waste.
‘One of the biggest sources of waste are disposable items such as plastic forks, knives, spoons, cups, water bottles, and everything else which gets used once and then tossed in the trash. Usually things made of paper are biodegradable, but most disposables composed of plastic aren’t. That means they can sit in landfills for hundreds of years before breaking down.’ http://www.topuniversities.com/blog/8-tips-more-sustainable-campus As we can see from this quote the biggest sources of waste are disposable items, so if Blackburn College was to use reusable cups and cutlery throughout the whole of the campus, they would save a lot of money and be able to spend the money on more useful things in the college.
The Legislation in which this recommendation would comply with would be the Environmental Protection Act which is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that as of 2008 defines, within England, Wales and Scotland, the fundamental structure and authority for waste management and control of emissions into the environment.
This Act was intended to strengthen pollution controls and support administration with heavier penalties, before the Act had been separate environmental regulation of air, water and land pollution, the Act brought in an integrated scheme that would seek the best practicable environmental option. There was previously no uniform system of licensing or public right of access to information.
The College can comply with this legislation because they do recycle their disposable waste, which can be used again to create new products for other people or companies, but instead of using disposables completely they can completely reduce waste if they use reusable cups and cutlery which they can just ask students to drink their liquids or eat their food with reusable cups and cutlery, and it will be making it a healthier place for the environment as well as the students and staff.
This also provides better value for money for the college because instead of purchasing disposable cups and cutlery which just gets thrown away straight after it has been used once, they can purchase reusable cups and cutlery which will be used over and over again, which will be saving them a lot of money in the long run, and it also saves having to throw away disposables, instead of wasting money purchasing disposable they can just buy proper cups and cutlery which can be washed after using them and then can be used again.
Preventing food waste
Another recommendation that could be used throughout Blackburn College which would help
