John Updike’s short story A&P is narrated by the dynamic character of Sammy, a nineteen-year-old grocery clerk at a local A&P. The story focuses on his experience involving three young girls who come into the store. Through Sammy’s analysis and observations of those around him, the reader is able to better understand his character. Sammy displays obvious immaturity, is chauvinistic in his views on women, and is disinterested in his surroundings. However, at the end of the story, Sammy’s impulsivity causes him to deal with the consequences of his actions, and his outlook on those around him changes.
The story revolves around Sammy’s narration of those around him. He notices everything around him, especially the three attractive young girls
