Chapter 11 In Hutter’s Experiencing cities is titled “Urban Enclaves and Ghettos: Social Policies”. The idea of this chapter was to discuss the rise in urban projects, especially amongst the African American community. It also discusses the buying of low income housing and renovating them, known as gentrification. Some of the main points of the chapter included Ghetto and Enclave, which included white ethnic and African American ghettos. Another main topic discussed Assimilation versus Hypersegregation. Finally and I feel is the most important topic discuessed is public housing. While it is great that public housing exists, especially in low income areas, it is a breeding ground for crime. However as discussed in the book the fact that low income housing has become a problem is not necessarily due to the people that live there, but more so with our government's …show more content…
It seems as if everywhere you go in a major metropolitan city you see tall buildings, plenty of landmarks as well as homeless people. With a decently high unemployment rate and pretty high housing costs around the country its no wonder why the homeless population is increasing. As I have discussed in my project affordable housing is a main concern of mine. With an increase in the homeless population, it increases how dirty a city is as well as the crime that occurs in cities. But I wanted to disc something I haven't talked about in my previous project updates or discussion starters. As also stated in the book, many of these homeless people have mental illnesses. With no place for them to go we have them roaming the streets and causing some problems. For example My roommate and I have been confronted by homeless before and yelled at and threatened by them. I feel that if we can create more places for them to stay it would clean up the cities and lessen the likelihood of these confrontations
