"In the Time of the Butterflies" is a story of four sisters, known as the Mirabal sisters, who stood up against dictatorship in their country. One major part of their story is how being a woman was a big part of their experiences and choices. Being women played a major role in shaping the Mirabal sisters' story. In their society at that time women were expected to stay at home, take care of their families, and not get involved in politics or speak out against injustice. However, despite these expectations, Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa, and Dede decided to fight for what they believed in.
