Inadequate housing is a major problem not only in Berlin but also in most of the major cities in the world. The main reason behind the housing problem in those metropolitan cities has been the fast rate of population increase. The rapid rate of urban population growth is fueled by massive rural-urban migration as well as a natural growth due to the number of births in those large cities. Moreover, the increase in population has by far surpassed the rate at which new houses are being generated. Over the past two decades, Berlin's population has been growing at a rate unmatched by housing plans in the city. It is estimated that approximately 40,000 people move into the city every year. It, therefore, becomes difficult to link the issue to its origin, which is essential in coming up with a workable solution that benefits the city and its people. Additionally, it is not easy to determine the rate at which population growth rises in the major cities or the variables that trigger rapid population growth. Furthermore, overcrowding has many health-associated implications that include disease, crime, and straining of the social amenities. For instance, research shows that children from overcrowded regions have a higher chance of contracting meningitis and three times more likely to contract respiratory problems (Bonnefoy 412). Overcrowded homes have further been associated with slow growth among children (Evans, Wells, and Moch 476).
