The process to conduct a scientific investigation goes as follows: Find a question, research, create a hypothesis, test hypotheses, analyze data, and report results. The purpose of scientific investigations is to find answers and make things more efficient. It is the most organized way to do so. Building a roller coaster is a series of mini scientific investigations. You think of ways to make it more efficient, form a hypothesis in your head, and test them out.
Atoms and elements are what make up the whole universe we live in. Atoms form to make elements, and elements make up everything around us. The three particles that make up an element are neutrons, protons, and electrons; protons being the particle that define the element. The periodic table is a table of all of the elements that we know of, it is organized by the type of elements and atomic numbers. The nails we used for the roller coaster are made of steel. We used wood, which is made of, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Elements bond to fill their outer shell(valence shell), they bond by taking electrons. Kinetic energy is the energy caused by something in motion. Potential energy is the energy that is stored due to where it is. Chemical energy is what is released during a chemical reaction. Electrical energy is energy caused by charges. Heat and light energy are both what is formed due to chemical or electrical energy. The Law of Conservation of Energy says that total energy can never be made or destroyed, but it can disperse and change forms. The types of energy in our project are kinetic, potential, electrical, and light. The height of the coaster creates potential energy for the marble, the sudden drop in elevation creates kinetic energy which keeps the marble moving throughout the course.
