When someone is independent, it shows that they can think and contemplate for themselves and brings forth their personality. Change encourages independence. When switching from a satisfactory state to a less sufficient or familiar one, to make mature and useful adjustments one must be independent. Consider the following scenario: a college freshman just moved to a completely different state, a completely different environment. With no family or guidance, he or she naturally needs to learn how to make decisions on his or her own and without the approval of others, therefore becoming a more independent thinking being. The uncomfortable aspect acquired by change allows an individual to figure out the important adaptations on his or her own. This forces them not to rely on others so much and take more action and responsibility for the direction in which their life will head. When experiencing any kind of change a lot can be realized, especially internally. Progress in independence therefore allows humans to assess what they let define them as well as whom they strive to
