Interviewed was Mary Smith. She has been a registered nurse (RN) for approximately a year and a half and was a licensed practical nurse (LPN) for six months prior to becoming an RN. Mary completed her schooling at Spokane Community College. Mary currently works at The Gardens on University, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center. In her position Mary acts as a supervisor of the certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and LPNs who work on her unit.

Well I’ve always been told that I am a natural caregiver, I seem to take care of everyone around me whether it be family, friends, or a stranger in need of help (M. Mary continues, at work I don’t really feel like I make much of a difference; I try to speak up when needed and I try to encourage others to continue to work hard taking care of our residents despite their frustrations with corporate and although most of my coworkers continue to work hard, corporate is just not interested in improving things for employees or residents, to them the only thing that seems to matter is that they make a profit (personal communication, January 25, 2017).
