By definition, an individual is one who is separate from another and demonstrates his or her own aspirations, necessities, and beliefs. Individuality is something that each person contains, and we as people have the ability to deliver it to society any way we choose. In the society live in, people may want to stand out from the crowd. Dying one’s hair green or pink might be one to do to stand out as an individual. Buying the latest clothes might be another person’s idea of being an individual. Depending on the environment and the people you are surrounded with will affect the way you deliver your style of individuality. However, individuality is most clearly defined by the morals and actions of a person. Some people try so hard to stand out by buying certain types of clothes. They feel that they are marching to their own drum because of the clothes they have on. Individuality counts less towards what is on the outside and more towards what is on the inside. In the world we live in today, many teenagers find it important and necessary to conform to the rest of society. Standing out in a crowd is not as important to the girl wearing Ugg boots and a pink Northface jacket as it is to the girl wearing the polka dot scarf and the neon yellow skinny jeans. However, this is simply just a look on the outside and personal deliverance of one’s self to the rest of society. Individuality is deeper than the clothes, shoes, and jackets you wear. The thoughts behind the clothes weigh more in terms of individuality. We as human beings have the ability have to control our actions and express ourselves the way we desire. As an American citizen, we also have the right to freedom in a free nation. Expressing individuality is a concept often taken for-granted. There are many countries that frown upon standing out to the extent of the Americans. In some Middle Eastern cultures, women are required to cover their bodies from head to toe. They dress in dark clothing so that little attention is drawn to them, if any at all. Differing from the Middle Eastern culture, American people often dress to the extreme; showing themselves off as if the world is always watching them. Although one covers their body with a black hijab and another dances around in a rainbow dress, the one covered is not any less of an individual as the one standing out physically.
