Modern day industrial hygienist are more than just compliance officers. Today’s industrial hygienist try to prevent safety mishaps before they happen. To tie the premise of preventative measures taken by industrial hygienist, I found an article concerning the University of California and mitigation of workers compensation claims. The University of California workers compensations claims were costing the university over 90 million dollars per year. The University’s Chief Risk Officer decided that she needed to move from a mere compliance adherence attitude, to a more prevention type of program. Two initiatives were introduced to help with prevention, and reduce the cost of workers compensation claims against the university. Said cost cutting measures came down to developing a program/initiative to handle worker safety and risk management. One outcome of the “Be Smart about Safety” program was a safety policy, issued by the University, that required food service employees to use ergonomic and nonslip shoes. Prior to the implementation of this new policy, the university was getting about 4000 slip claims a year, at a cost of seven million dollars per year. Although the enactment of this policy cost the university about $8,000.00 (to buy the shoes), in the long run the use of the nonslip shoes cut the food service operation budget by 40%. (Wojcik,
