Inequality In Dr. Sassen's Summary

In Dr. Saskia Sassen’s presentation, she brings up the idea of “expulsions” and first mentions it as something trivial like an expulsion from school, but she wants to redefine the word. Yet she says this word is not definite, but is part of an ongoing conversation about the inequalities and the extremes of the global society. Expulsions are said to define what is past the “more”. For example, what is beyond inequality, financial crisis, or housing insecurity? Expulsion is meant to explain what is past the point of no return and at the extreme of these difficult issues. Sassen talks about immigration. First, it was seen that there was an enormous increase in spending when it came to the U.S. border and increased immigration officers. This could be seen as the beginning of the inequalities as these people who are coming into the country are getting scrutinized closer and closer to a point where it is very difficult for people to get across the border and a mass stereotyping of one word, terrorism. Then it increases even more, as Dr. Sassen shows, with the Patriot Act which allows deportation without hearings or evidence if the Attorney General considers them dangerous and allows for states to pass immigration legislation that allows them to do raids on factories and homes which goes against federal laws; all of this is done under Homeland Security, which undoubtedly links immigration with terrorism which could be considered another inequality. In these raids, immigrants are arrested if there is no proof of citizenship on their person. This means that there are legal immigrants who are arrested and not given a trial or hearing because of these local legislations. This is an example of ‘more inequalities’ or expulsion when the citizens of the country are no longer included in the regular forms of society or the denial of their rights on an extreme
